If you didn't read part one of this crazy-ness .... Look at The Monkey In The Asylum - Day 1 & 2
Nathan threw up from about 10:45 PM last night to 3 AM this morning and finally got some sleep, and woke up at 7:30 and checked on him, low and behold, he's dying of thirst, he is red all over, the whites of his eyes are even red and he is running this fever....
We literally scooped him up and ran off to the ER. Where he was naked and put on monitors. They got an IV in him almost right away....
IV placed .... fluids given, he was severely dehydrated - it took several pokes. He quickly fell asleep.
He is RED .... just to show how red, he is normally about my skin color....
10:30 AM ..... there is already talk of transferring him to Seattle Childrens ....
His heart rate is up and his blood pressure is low... they ended up putting in another IV into him....
They did a ton of blood tests, two bags of fluids.... darker urine..... been there, done that....
It was decided after a couple of hours that he was being transferred to Children's Seattle .... Before noon we were being transferred.... LIGHTS AND SIRENS..... we weren't transferred lights and sirens when he had his 106 temp last fall.
And then I heard something from the EMT when he was calling the ER at Children's to announce our arrival.... he said Severe Sepsis and Kidney Failure.....
I thought - he couldn't be talking about Nate. So I asked. He said "That's what we were told" I said "I wasn't told anything" .... so he let me look at the lab work and the papers .... his kidneys were definitely not happy, his white blood cell count should have been no higher than 10.5 ... his was 27.6. There were other tests I didn't understand that were not good. Either too high or too low..... I was going to ask if he minded if I took pictures so I could show my husband what I was seeing - but I didn't get the chance to.
One tired Momma ....
They left the paper work in the room with us...... this is what he was diagnosed with.
Y'all Super Nathan needs all the special prayers and healing vibes he can get!! Wednesday he was complaining that his back and right side (or both his sides) were hurting and I thought he might be constipated... Wed night we noticed that his right scrotum was red, swollen and painful. Thurs we took him into the doc for it. They sent us to the ER where he was diagnosed with a UTI and Epididymitis. Sent us home with antibiotics. He started throwing up around 11pm ... Including his meds, until almost 3am. Total of 10 plus times. No fever. Thought it might be the antibiotic, planned on calling in the AM. Woke up at 7:30 am and checked on him... He was red, whites of his eyes were red, he was hot. Checked his temp, 105. Scooped him up and to the ER ... ER ran some tests. Then we were sent to Children's Seattle with lights and sirens going the whole way. He has what I said before, plus, severe sepsis now, acute kidney failure, and his white blood cell count is high, normal high is 10.5, he is at 27.6. We are waiting at Seattle Children's now.....
My poor sick little boy. He spent most of his time sleeping in the ER. He was getting swollen and the whites of his eyes were red.
He ended up with one ultrasound to check his testicle again.
Doors of our ER room...
This is a comparison of Nathan's face yesterday, and tonight all swollen......
Swelling came down some..... and funny enough, came down more on the left side (right side of the pic) than the right side.
There was a lot of talk and hemming and hawing about if he should go up to the PICU or a regular ped room in the hospital. They kept going back and forth.
Ultrasound #2 checking his kidneys and his bladder.... Now, her name is Susanna, she talked Dinos with Nathan, she took a dance break, and he was in love with her. Just sayin .... seriously - Mom was chopped liver and his interaction with her was the most we'd seen out of him all day. Not even joking a little...
Back to sleep .... Swelling in his face has gone down but it's picked up in his hands and feet.... We've been at this 12 hours with no food... We don't want to eat in front of him.. Nate is still sleeping a lot but awake a little more. We see little bursts of alert....
Every time Nathan woke up for a minute or two - he'd cry for something to drink, something to eat, or both.... finally - at about 11 PM - his nurse said "I don't care what the doctors say, you aren't having surgery tonight" and she handed us 3 sets of food - turkey sandwich, pretzels (goldfish for Nate), cheese stick, pudding and drink.... THANK YOU NURSE AWESOME!!!
Finally it was decided that we'd go to a regular Peds room and the ICU staff would follow Nathan.
PS: I watched FROZEN for the first time tonight with Nathan. He wasn't awake for some of it the first time, but he saw enough that he said he wanted to to see it again.....
It was so nice, we watched it TWICE!
